A shore to explore

Michigan’s historic West Michigan Pike is more than just a road; it’s a living piece of history.

Lakeside discovery up the West Michigan Pike

Once a vital route connecting Chicago to the vacation destinations along Lake Michigan, the Pike is now a nostalgic journey filled with natural beauty, historic landmarks, and vibrant small towns—perfect for a spring road trip.

THE LEGACY OF THE PIKE

The West Michigan Pike was established in the early 1910s, during the rise of automobile travel. The state’s West Michigan Pike Association spearheaded its creation, aiming to connect travelers from Chicago to the state’s pristine beaches, resorts, and attractions. By 1922, the Pike became part of the state trunkline system and later integrated into US-31. This historic route showcased Michigan’s natural beauty and spurred economic growth throughout the area.

While modern highways like I-94 and I-196 have taken over much of the traffic, the legacy of the West Michigan Pike lives on. Driving along its path today is like stepping back in time, offering a glimpse into Michigan’s early 20th-century tourism boom.
